What’s Cool on Kickstarter

There’s many interesting items to be found on Kickstarter, but these are the coolest ones this week. It’s been a while since I posted one of these, but I couldn’t be more excited to have a new Monte Cook Games Kickstarter.

Invisible Sun
I love everything I have ever gotten from MCG. They’re a great company with great ideas, and I trust them to give me a great project. Which is why I’m willing to drop almost $200 for the base version of their new game. This is crazy expensive you guys, and pretty prohibitive for a lot of groups, but I can’t wait to see what the new game is like. Invisible Sun is a surreal fantasy game using an entirely new mechanic that is d10 based. It’s not a new Cypher game. Also the surreal setting and the mechanics are super tightly intertwined, so there isn’t any separating them. It’s also introducing a mode of play that’s away from the table using a web app to keep your group in contact. I don’t think there’s another game company I would trust to pull this all together, but MCG has earned my trust and I’m going to take the plunge.

“Do you dream of escape, but you don’t know from what, or to where? Looking for a chance to escape the insanity of the world, and immerse yourself into something rich, deep, and fantastical? Something that challenges the limits of your creativity and your intellect?

We at Monte Cook Games have done a number of Kickstarter campaigns in the past, and we are proud of our track record of delivering high-quality, on-time products. This Kickstarter campaign is a bit different. Befitting the nature of this game, each of the backer levels is a spell that summons an extradimensional box of secrets called (in the setting) the Black Cube. In this case, the Black Cube you’ll be summoning is filled with wonders. You can get the game, which itself is a deluxe product and a thing of beauty (Call the Black Cube) or you can get the game with the Directed Campaign and all the stretch goals (Control the Black Cube). There’s also a special level for our awesome retailers (Entreat With the Black Cube) and two for a few of you to get the really deluxe treatment (Master the Black Cube and Merge with the Black Cube).”

Bones of the Coast
I’m a firm believer that the West coast is the best coast, and this anthology of horror set in the great PNW makes my heart happy. I’m in love with the art that they have on the kickstarter page, and can’t wait to see this horror comic anthology come to life! (Or back to life as the case may be.)

“Bones of the Coast is a full-colour, 220+ page comic anthology, chock-full of horror from the Pacific Northwest. Simultaneously haunting and hauntingly beautiful, BOTC is guaranteed to tickle your fancy.

The anthology features 35 different creators from British Columbia, the Pacific Northwest, and abroad–and the stories within are sure to thrill and terrify.”

Electrum Campaign Coins
Campaign Coins rightly has a great reputation for making amazing coins. We were able to check out a lot of their stock while at GenCon, and Aser had to drag me away. These cool new coins are perfect for introducing evil into your campaign, they’re black and have spiders, creepy hands, and skulls all over them. As they hit stretch goals, there will be even more awesome coins to add to your collection.

“Electrum is a mysterious currency, keenly sought but rarely found. It appears then disappears in different editions of fantasy roleplaying games. We like the idea that its rarity brings great wealth to the finder… and great misfortune. Our Electrum coins were minted by a long-forgotten empire who harnessed dark powers. Those pacts ultimately threw them down into ruin, but their coins are still found in dark places.

Historically, Electrum was a mix of silver and gold. But, for us, this would be too similar to the other coins, and hard to distinguish on the table. We wanted to make our Electrum unique. Our new black nickel finish is perfect. It produces a dark and shining coin. The longer you stare at them, the more disturbing details appear.”

This is Fine Plush
2016, overall, has been a pretty shitty year. Aser and I tried to rescue it by getting married, but most people don’t even want to turn on the news to find out who else has died, what terrible tragedy has occured, or get news about the 2016 election. Because of this, the “This is Fine” comic has been getting a lot of play, as the dog sits with the world burning down around it. If you feel that same sense of trying to keep on when everything is terrible, maybe you need a plushie version of the dog to help keep you strong.

“From my old webcomic “Gunshow,” this dark horse of a comic rose into prominent usage among the college testing crowd and grew from there. Normally the first two panels are only seen. Brevity is the soul of wit, after all! But it continued to seep into the consciousness of America and the world as things seemingly just got… worse.

I, for one, hope there’ll be a day when we no longer have to look for the dog on fire to support our feelings, but until that day comes, maybe a nice big plush of the boy will help.

We are working with Soft Stuff Creations to make this 13″ tall plush of our favorite dog (his name is Question Hound, if you care to know). He comes with a nice flat butt to sit upright and quietly stare off, wall-eyed, into the middle distance. Trying to suppress it all. And he has a little plush coffee cup too, with his good catch phrase emblazoned on it.”

Still active!
