What’s Cool on Kickstarter

There’s many interesting items to be found on Kickstarter, and here are the coolest ones this week.

Things Could Be Worse Mugs
I love the Calamityware plates, and now there are mugs too! The design includes one disaster per ounce the mug holds. They’re microwave and dishwasher safe, and made of porcelain, so you’re getting really nice, really funny mugs!

“Lost your keys? Lost your job? Look at the bright side. At least you’re not plagued by pterodactyls, pursued by giant robots, or pestered by zombie poodles. Life is good! The Things-Could-Be-Worse Mug is designed to remind you how lucky you are.

What do you get? Sponsors of this Kickstarter project will receive sets of four identical mugs decorated with my multi-calamity drawing. These mugs are made and decorated by the award-winning Kristoff Porcelain workshop in Poland using the traditional in-glaze technique. The mugs are food safe, microwave safe, and dishwasher safe so you can use them every day to remind you of all the problems you don’t have.”

Microscope Explorer
Aser and I have been wanting to try Microscope for a while, a game where you start out small and then build your own universe. Now that there’s an expansion to the original RPG, we can’t wait to jump in!

“Microscope is a game where you sit down and create an epic history, spanning hundreds or thousands of years, all in just a few hours of play. Create cities, nations or whole worlds… or destroy them.

You can defy the limits of time and space, jumping backward or forward to explore the parts of the history that interest you. Want to leap a thousand years into the future and see how an institution shaped society? Want to jump back to the childhood of the king you just saw assassinated and find out what made him such a hated ruler? That’s normal in Microscope.

Microscope Explorer is an expansion that lets you take Microscope in whole new directions. Explore a family tree with UNION. Forge the epic story of a city, a ship or a sword of power in CHRONICLE. Travel back in time and rewrite history in ECHO.

It’s loaded with tools and strategies to get the most out of all your Microscope games, like SEEDS to get you started playing faster, TECHNIQUES to improve play, and WORLD-BUILDING methods to create settings for other role-playing games.”

Reaper Miniatures: Bones 3
Reaper Miniatures are some of the best on the market. They’re releasing another set of their Bones line on Kickstarter, and it’s a great place to buy up some cool miniatures for your game.

“Thanks to you, our last two Kickstarters were an amazing success! We’ve added over 500 new models to the Bones range, and we’ve discovered that these products are monstrously popular. You wanted more! More Monsters! More Demons! More Dragons! More Characters! More variety and more amazing new models!

You’re in luck! We haven’t even scratched the surface. We have many more models that we think deserve to be added to Bones – new sculpts and classic favorites from our metal lines! We’d like to see if you think so, too!

Bones are still really expensive to produce, and we still need your help to expand the line. Your support makes the molds that we need to produce the figures, and in exchange you get the first crack at these figures for a fantastic deal!

Bones are only the best high-quality plastic gaming models to hit the industry in the last decade. Inexpensive, high quality, soft gaming models that are easy and fun to paint and won’t break when you actually use them for games!”

The 20th HP Lovecraft Film Fest and Cthulhu Con
Even if you can’t make it to Portland for Cthulhu Con, you can still get some of the really cool swag they’re going to be offering. Also, Charles Stross and Adam Scott Glancy are going to be there, so it’s your chance to meet/hear from them!

“This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival® in Portland, OR! We invite you to join us for this celebration of film, literature, and art. Much of our programming is still being confirmed. Expect big announcements soon!

We’ll be presenting the Howie Award to our Guest of Honor Charles Stross (the Laundry Files), a special anniversary screening of the HPLHS’s Call of Cthulhu, a catered 1930s Speakeasy VIP event on Thursday, Oct. 1, plus a pre-party at Portland’s own original Lovecraft bar! Add to that the usual over-full weekend of amazing films, panel discussions, author readings, art competitions, vendors, and live performances, and you’ve got a weekend of unique experiences and memories.

Join us for an Expedition to R’lyeh! This year’s rewards and theme center around a secret return trip to the island by the Miskatonic University’s Explorers Club. Live the excitement with Kickstarter exclusives like the Expedition Log Book, the map of the island (with landmarks named after several of the explorers… that could be you!), a box of sculpted artifacts, and show your allegiance with our official MU Explorers Club lapel pins and shirts, or be one of the cultists in our limited edition winged Cthulhu lapel pins and shirts. Either way, be sure to grab the goods you want now because most won’t be available outside this Kickstarter.”

What’s Cool on Kickstarter

There’s many interesting items to be found on Kickstarter, and here are the coolest ones this week.

Space Roller: Futuristic Dice
These are some pretty neat looking d6. They were designed to be futuristic, but I would love to use them in any game.

“As a Sci- Fi lover, I’ve always yearned for one day I can experience the world like Star Wars, Blade Runner, Matrix, Tron, Starcraft ever since I was a kid. After so many years, I become a designer and I start to get back into tabletop game from TV game and PC game. Dreadball fanatics is the one I like to play. It’s a really fun game, but I always feel some futuristic elements are missing, just like a watching a football game without beer. So I decide to design my own dice that can satisfied my desire and here comes the Space Roller.”

Treasure Chest
This is a lovely treasure box that I would love to keep my dice and tokens in. Stretch goals have added locks and other items to improve the box. You can use it hold cards and other treasures.

“The Chest comes with 3 compartments to store your fantasy coins & bars, or your dice and counters for any table top or role playing games.

Made from plywood. The printed patterns on the chest is made from synthetic leather that is glued on to the plywood surface.”

The Outer Presence
This is a short adventure, and I love collecting more of those to play!

“Ok, what’s The Outer Presence about? An expedition to New Guinea. I took a little inspiration from Cannibal Holocaust, Lost, and H.P. Lovecraft. I’ve playtested it twice and have a couple guys looking it over and hopefully playtesting it themselves over the next few weeks.”

The Pale Blue Die
“To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.” – Carl Sagan

These dice are inspired by a quote by Carl Sagan, and they’re pretty interesting d6.

“The message and power of the original photograph are only equaled by Carl Sagan’s poignant and candid words in the passage from his book. They’ve always meant a great deal to me and with this die I wanted to pay tribute to the original photograph and those powerful words, the meaning they have for me and the importance of their overall message to our planet and us as a species.

I chose a D6 die for this project to pay tribute to the record setting distance this photograph was taken from, 6 Billion Kilometers. Each of the six sides of the die counts out the number of heavenly bodies shown (Sun, earth, moon and other planets) and shows their path through the solar system.

The #1 side depicts the original Voyager 1 photograph only showing the earth as a pale blue dot highlighted by rays of sunlight. ”

The Thin Blue Line
This a modern horror campaign set in Detroit. It looks like a very interesting setup, and I haven’t ever seen a game set in Detroit.

“Calamity brews in Detroit. Paranormal activity is on the rise. An angry spirit, a dangerous creature, or a pack of desperate cultists hides under every sewer cover and within every abandoned building. Corktown has a secret, though. Its crew of supposed washouts are either psychics or have encountered the paranormal. The officers of Corktown Precinct stand between the city and paranormal onslaught. These damaged, over-worked, and under-paid officers must keep paranormal activity in Detroit under wraps and out of sight. No mean feat in a city as old, large, and haunted as Detroit. Corktown officers face constant threats from mundane crime, paranormal forces, as well as their inner demons and growing madness.

Do they have what it takes? Can they stand against the growing threats, or will they be consumed, along with the city they guard? The Thin Blue Line is a modern horror setting for Savage Worlds tabletop role playing game.”

What’s Cool on Kickstarter

Wyrmwood Magnetic Dice Tower
This dice tower is gorgeous. There are a bunch of wood options and add-ons to the tower, but it’s all gorgeous. And expensive. Some of the options cost upwards of $800. But they are very nice, well made, and even portable.

“As a Kickstarter Exclusive, we have created a very limited number of Dice Tower Systems featuring hand cut marquetry and custom inlay. Made with elm burl, highly figured birch, holly, ebony, and silver, this is the highest level of craftsmanship available, and a piece that stands out on any game table. ”

World War Cthulhu: Cold War
If you want to move beyond WWI and WWII in your Call of Cthulhu adventures, you should definitely check out this setting for the Cold War.

“World War Cthulhu: Cold War throws you into one of the most paranoid and chaotic conflicts of the 20th century. The tangled webs of the spymasters tear and rejoin, double and triple agents make their moves and counter-moves, and it’s hard to be sure which side you’re really working for. Nuclear destruction hangs over everyone, and a few people at the heart of western intelligence continue their personal battle against the insidious influence of a much older enemy…”

At the Mountains of Madness
Here’s a secret, I haven’t read At the Mountains of Madness yet. But I think this game looks like it could be pretty great, and a fun way to experience the story.

“Back in the 1930’s you play in first-person perspective by the geologist William Dyer, a professor at Miskatonic University, as if in the hope to deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. in search of undiscovered fossils and zones unexplored by man.

The game is being developed with the Unreal Engine 4 and will be available for PC/MAC/Linux, using latest technology like Directx11, physics / wind / ragdoll system, post-processing effects and lighting.”

Blackskull Dice
These are some pretty pretty dice, and they’re available in a lot of woods and colors of acrylic. Unfortunately they only are making d6, but they’re very nice dice.

“Have you ever been to a gaming night and were afraid and ashamed to bust out your dice? Have DMs ever looked at you like you are a crazy warlock when you rolled? Thanks to Blackskull Dice you now have the chance to fix this problem!

Blackskull Dice is the result of me being that person described above. Not only did I want to have some awesome dice for our next game night but I wanted dice that no one else had. So… I made some one of a kind dice out of my exotic woods and acrylic blanks I use for other woodworking projects.”

Hyde
I want to go through this maze right now. I love that you have to do certain things to get the doors to open and move on through. I hope that once they raise the money they can come to the US, especially out to the West Coast, so I can go through it.

“Hyde is a maze game inspired by the tale of Jekyll and Hyde. We’re building it in London. Set in the near future, the experience will be like playing a cross between the Crystal Maze and Portal but in the real world. We’ve developed some really cool tech that will bring Hyde to life, we’re now looking for your support to build it into a real world game environment.

This is the story:

You’re taking part in experimental trials of a new drug developed by the Jekyll Corporation. It’s designed to modify the capabilities of the human body, giving you the power to control your environment simply by controlling your physical state (your pulse rate, breathing, posture etc).

Armed with some wearable tech your assignment is to navigate your way though a maze of connected rooms, using your new powers to complete a series of increasingly challenging tasks along the way.

But this is a smart maze: it knows where you are, and how you’re doing. You begin to realise that someone – or something – is working against you. You’ll need to stay calm to retain control of your surroundings. Because there’s only one way out of this maze, and that’s through it…”

What’s Cool on Kickstarter

Cthulhu Wars: The Art of Richard Luong
This art book is lovely and full of Mythos horror.

“I am extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on Cthulhu Wars. Before the project, I had worked in games as an illustrator and concept artist. My art didn’t garner much attention. Cthulhu Wars launched and was a huge success. All of a sudden people took notice of my work and for the first time ever, I had fans.

From this success, I decided to start a Facebook art page called Tentacles and Teeth. Slowly more and more people began to find my work and enjoy my visions! This inspired me to create more and evolve. This book is a collection of work that represents my evolution as an artist. With your help, I can make this book a reality.”

Grim: A Roll for your Life Dice Game
Landan Smith suggested checking out this game and it looks pretty awesome! It’s a nice little dice game that looks like it’s super easy to pick up and enjoy.

“The game is quick, family friendly, and designed for 2-6 players (although you can play with as many people as you want if you have enough copies of the game).

The game was created by a group of friends during lunch breaks — and quickly evolved into something we’ve really enjoyed sharing with our friends and family and playing for hours. With the encouragement of said friends and family members we’ve decided to bring the game to Kickstarter to see if we can’t take this little game we made from a dream project into a reality!!”

The Writer: Cthulhu Playing Cards
This game has shown up on Kickstarter before, but they’ve revamped it. I think the pieces that go with it look really cool.

“Each card represents part of a story. In the game there are 8 unique stories represented by a color and symbol. You can complete a story by getting 5 cards with the same symbol.

The game has different rounds. The first round’s aim is to get one story, on the next 2 rounds you must complete 2 stories; and the next rounds 3. However you always start to play with only five cards, so you will need more cards to complete the stories, but beware, once you get them you will have to get rid of all the ones you have left! You will need to decide on your strategy!

Each card has a unique ability, represented by its top icon. This ability enables you to get additional cards; to repeat your turn; to take cards from the discard pile or to get rid of your own cards. You will use the abilities depending on your strategy, the game’s progress and the aim of the round.

A round ends when a player meets the defined aim and manages to dispose of their remaining cards. The winner will mark their stories on the library card and the losers lose sanity points for the cards remaining in their hand.”
